At the end of July, I was laid off from my beloved job. Well, the job itself had changed and the company I worked for was bought out. I didn't particularly care for the new company nor their way of treating part-time employees. I saw this lay off coming and I wasn't particularly happy with the new company. Even with this foresight, I am still finding myself very sad for my old job. It really was a perfect job for the time I had it. It had great potential for me and my career, but sometimes life doesn't turn out the way we plan - okay, life never turns out the way we plan.
The last two weeks I've been madly searching for a new job. I have updated my resume and contacted my fellow HR friends to let them know I'm on the job hunt. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm making myself crazy. I am having a hard time doing fun and relaxing things during the day as I feel I must be working instead. Even know my job was only 12 hours/week, I'm spending way more time looking for a job than I actually worked at my job. So...starting this afternoon, my goal is to enjoy my time off. Enjoy the time I have with my kids. I may never have an opportunity like this again. I will probably still be sad for awhile for my old job. I am sure that will lessen as time goes on. Perhaps this lay off will bring me something I would have never received had I still been working. The last time I got laid off in 2002, the next job I had was my first HR job. That was definitely a blessing in disguise and for one I'm forever grateful.
Here's to having a bit of fun and relaxation!

I hope you have been finding ways to not be in job-search/panic mode 24/7! But I understand that feeling. When I was looking for a job between Hallmark and the gardening magazine, it was not a good feeling -- constantly ill at ease.
But if you can get past that feeling, yes, there are benefits to being home for a bit. You can help your kids get settled into the school year without having to juggle work hours, too. There's that! And starting a job during the school year is much less complicated childcare-wise than starting during the summer.
Sometimes the thing that is waiting for you just isn't ready yet -- it will come! I hope that you can keep calm in the meantime. :) I'm sending virtual hugs. :)
